Federal Detention Center
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Thirty-two feet below 7th Street in Center City, Philadelphia, A.P. Construction, Inc. crews worked to install a 14 ½ foot “horse shoe” tunnel. Work included the installation of a forced air system, the hand dug excavation of soils and the installation of a galvanized rib-steel support system that provided structural stability as the tunnel advanced. The tunnel wall and roof section finishes included a waterproof bentonite mat placed between two applications of pressured concrete and reinforced steel.

The new pedestrian tunnel provided the Federal Bureau of Prisons a needed passage way that allows the secure transport of prisoners from the Federal Detention Center to the Byrne Courthouse.
