| The award winning Christopher Columbus Boulevard Reconstruction Project* began in October of 1999 when Penndot hired A.P. Construction, Inc., to perform the $27 million dollar transportation project. The undertaking covered little more than two miles between Race Street and Aramingo Avenue. The project goals were to improve safety and traffic flow on this section of highway (SR2001- B02) while promoting pedestrian and bicycle traffic in one of the most populated commercial and entertainment corridors in Philadelphia The project scope entailed complete roadway reconstruction including establishing new east and west side curb lines, roadway island construction, storm sewer systems, water mains, underground electric duct-banks, traffic control signals, an east side river walk and a new roadway profile. The transportation project enhanced safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists, replaced aging infrastructure, improved mobility, and added the needed lighting to support the growing residential, entertainment and commercial areas served by Christopher Columbus Boulevard. * The Pennsylvania Partnership for Highway Quality Safety Award |
